TX-1.1 Wind Tunnel Testing

The MYTHOS TX-1.1 debuted at the Glasgow 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. A total of 4 world championship gold medals were won using the MYTHOS TX-1 and MYTHOS TX-1.1 handlebars at the Glasgow 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, in the disciplines of Madison, Points and Elimination.

Aerodynamic improvements of 3 - 4% have been reported by national federations testing with Olympic level riders, using both track and wind tunnel methods. To achieve maximum benefit the riders position must be optimised aerodynamically for the MYTHOS TX-1.1 position. A sprint version of the MYTHOS TX-1.1 is available, with increased stiffness and strength, suitable for the strongest Olympic level sprint athletes.

We took UCI TCL athlete Francesca Selva to the Silverstone Sport Engineering Hub wind tunnel to test the TX-1.1 handlebar, and found a 5.5% reduction in aerodynamic drag between sustainable racing positions. Our process is an aerodynamic bike fit process developed for time-trial positions, in this case using an adjustable stem designed for wind tunnel testing to optimise for the MYTHOS TX-1.1 position.

The fastest option for Francesca involved hooking her wrists in a “puppy paws” style. This closes the space between her head and arms, resulting in an 8.4% drag reduction compared to baseline. During short range attacks Francesca can use this position. For long range attacks a more comfortable, sustainable position is required.

Through further experimentation using the adjustable stem, the MYTHOS TX-1.1 is moved forward, raised and rotated around the stem clamp. This improves comfort by reducing strain on the triceps. A sustainable position is found with a 5.5% reduction in aerodynamic drag compared to baseline.

Francesca has been using both positions in competition. To complete the process, MYTHOS supplied Francesca with a custom stem replicating the final bar position found during the wind tunnel optimisation process.
